Cleaning Up My Act (and My Home)

Hubby: What did I just step on?

Me: Oh, that was Mariam’s lunch she decided to throw on the floor. I need to vacuum and mop sometime today.

The next day…

Me: (sees Mariam about to put yesterday’s floor-lunch into her mouth) Ew, Mariam! Don’t eat that! 

I promise you that I always miss cleaning or organizing something every single week. And no, this doesn’t just happen because I have a toddler. It’s a constant struggle of mine. Trying to balance everything that needs to get done is something I’m trying so hard to improve. I can do this!

My husband is super helpful, but we’ve agreed on the chores and who is primarily responsible for getting specific tasks done. I’ve gratefully volunteered to do most of the house chores because I secretly like knowing the ins and outs of our home. I also like choosing where everything goes and deciding how it’s cleaned (it’s the housewife in me).

It’s great if you don’t have too many tasks to get done around the house (like your house is always super maintained) or if you have a system that doesn’t require more than a daily cleaning schedule. Unfortunately, this cleaning schedule does not work for me anymore. Keeping up with my home is more complicated than a simple reminder to “clean the kitchen”. I was forgetting all of what “cleaning the kitchen” entails.

Let me explain…

Keeping up with a household (for me) isn’t:

  • Vacuum the living room
  • Wipe kitchen counters
  • Scrub the bathtub

It’s more like:

  • Vacuum the living room
    • Suction up all the dead bugs in the corners of the room so Mariam doesn’t eat them
  • Wipe kitchen counters
    • Remove all of the appliances and get all of those crumbs off from last week’s Maftoul dinner
  • Scrub the bathtub
    • Find an old toothbrush and scrub the tile wall because it’s starting to mildew and that’s because your house is a poorly built sauna from the 80s.

Catch my drift?

Needless to say that I missed not one spot, but many important spots around my home and it bugged me enough to where I had to create a new way to keep up.

Now I follow a new method that works better for me. The method is simple and straightforward (I don’t have the time or intellect for something more complicated).

Below, you will see a link to my new cleaning method first-hand. And below that, I’m giving you a blank template similar to mine just in case you want to try it out.

Cleaning Checklist

My method is a simple checklist of chores that need to get done on a weekly basis. Some things are a simple “organize” or “dust”, while others require a more deep clean. I never know which day I will have the time or energy to do a specific task, so with this checklist I do what I can when I can and then I check it off so I know that I’m done for the week.

Does it look overwhelming? Yes, it does. Let me tell you though, it isn’t as intimidating as it looks. A lot of it can be done in the same half hour (or let’s be honest, it’s more like 10 minutes that I can squeeze in while Mariam undoes what I just cleaned).
